1998 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-040

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team, this 1998 Lincoln Memorial Cent exhibits doubled die characteristics at two column locations: a bar extends from the bottom of the hand to the lower leg to the left of the statue on the sixth column, and a second bar extends from the upper knee to the middle of the leg to the right of the statue on the seventh column. The dual-column bar pattern makes WDDR-040 more visually complex than single-column varieties. On the obverse, a die chip is centered above the two 9s of the date. Reverse die markers include a die chip touching the upper left side of the N of CENT and a die chip within the lower right side of the D of UNITED. The presence of bars on both the sixth and seventh columns indicates that the hub doubling affected a broad swath of the Memorial's central architectural detail. The obverse die chip above the date serves as a reliable die-marriage identifier before even examining the reverse doubling.
