Description

Doubling concentrated on the right side of the sixth column to the left of the upper statue within the Lincoln Memorial facade pinpoints this thirty-eighth Wexler-listed doubled die reverse for the 1998 Lincoln Memorial Cent. The Memorial reverse, designed by Frank Gasparro and introduced in 1959, features an intricate architectural rendering of the Lincoln Memorial with twelve columns on each side of the central entrance — a level of detail that makes even subtle hub doubling visible under magnification. When the reverse working hub re-engaged the working die at a fractional offset during the hubbing process, the architectural elements received a secondary impression that manifests as displaced column lines. Die markers confirm attribution: an obverse die gouge between the R and U in TRUST, another gouge to the right of the bottom of the bust, and a reverse die dot inside the O of ONE. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 1998 1-cent WDDR-038 with no other known listings, this variety was cataloged by the Wexler Team. The 1998 Philadelphia Mint struck over 5.0 billion cents, consuming a vast number of die pairs and providing ample opportunity for hubbing anomalies. The thirty-eighth entry in the reverse doubled die sequence for this single date illustrates the extraordinary depth of variety documentation on Memorial Cents.
