Description

The 1998 WDDR-037 Lincoln Memorial cent shows doubling on the lower right side of the 6th column to the left of the statue's legs, a pickup point that requires examining the narrow columns flanking the recessed Lincoln statue. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint on copper-plated zinc planchets weighing 2.5 grams with a 19 mm diameter, this variety presents numerous obverse die markers: numerous die scratches running SW/NE to the right of Lincoln's profile. The reverse carries additional diagnostics including a small die gouge to the left of the Memorial roof, and die clash marks in the fourth and ninth Memorial bays, indicating this die was involved in a clash event where the obverse and reverse dies struck together without a planchet between them. Cross-referenced as CONECA 6-R-VIII (indicating Class VIII, tilted hub doubling) and Wexler Variety ID 1998 1c WDDR-037, this variety was cataloged by the Wexler Team. The Class VIII tilted hub classification means the working hub was slightly tilted during the hubbing process, producing doubling that is concentrated in certain areas of the die rather than uniformly distributed. The die clash marks in the Memorial bays add a secondary point of interest, as collectors may be able to identify faint impressions of Lincoln's portrait within the bay areas. This variety is part of the Lincoln Memorial Cents 1959-2008 series, and the 1998 Philadelphia cent had a mintage of approximately 5.03 billion pieces.
