1998 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-018
Error
Description
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1998 1¢ WDDR-018, this Lincoln Memorial Cent displays an extremely strong partial image of the Memorial floor and steps visible at the bottom of the second through fifth Memorial bays, accompanied by a bar running from the elbow to the middle of the knee to the right of the statue on the seventh Memorial column — one of the more dramatic doubled die reverse features documented on Lincoln Memorial Cents, where the displaced hub impression transferred an entire architectural floor section into the bay openings. Obverse die markers include a die scratch running southwest to northeast to the right of the Y in LIBERTY and parallel die scratches running northeast from the vest to the left of the 1 in the date. Reverse markers include light die scratches running north to south through bays 7 through 11. Additional commentary notes that the hub marker above the N in UNUM is not visible, the hub markers at the top of Memorial bays 7 and 8 are visible, and the roof hub markers are not visible — observations that help distinguish this doubled die from other varieties with similar bay-area doubling by documenting which standard hub reference points are present or absent. No cross-references to other cataloging systems are currently known. The Lincoln Memorial Cent was designed by Frank Gasparro for the reverse and Victor David Brenner for the obverse. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1998 in copper-plated zinc (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) weighing 2.5 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter. The partial Memorial floor image in the bays creates a variety where the doubling produces an architecturally recognizable element — the floor pattern of the actual Lincoln Memorial building — visible in an area that should normally show empty space between the columns.
