Description

Sixteenth DDR documented for the 1998 Lincoln Memorial Cent, WDDR-016 exhibits doubling on the left side of the statue's lower right leg within the Memorial design — one of the tiniest and most intricate design elements on any circulating U.S. coin. Frank Gasparro's seated Lincoln figure requires substantial magnification to examine properly, and the doubling on the lower right leg indicates hub displacement affected the statue area during die manufacture. Precisely documented die markers aid attribution across both sides: the obverse carries a die gouge touching the upper lip just below the nose, while the reverse shows two short vertical parallel die scratches to the right of the bottom of the T in CENT and a short vertical die scratch to the left of the lower T in CENT. The parallel die scratch pair on the reverse provides a particularly distinctive secondary diagnostic because parallel scratches of similar length and orientation are uncommon coincidental occurrences. Sixteen DDRs from the 1998 date reflects the continued pace of variety discovery throughout the Memorial Cent's final decade of production. No additional cross-references beyond the Wexler designation are known. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID: 1998 1¢ WDDR-016, this variety combines statue-area doubling with a strong set of die markers that collectively enable confident attribution even when the primary doubling is subtle.
