1998 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-010
Error
Description
Within the extended 1998 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial Cent doubled die reverse series documented by the Wexler Team, die identification depends heavily on the presence or absence of hub markers embedded in each working die. WDDR-010 is distinguished by its complete set of absent markers: the hub marker above the N in UNUM is not visible; the hub markers at the top of Memorial bays 7 and 8 are not visible; and the roof hub markers are not visible. The Lincoln Memorial reverse, designed by Frank Gasparro and introduced in 1959, features the columned Memorial building centered between E PLURIBUS UNUM above and the denomination below. Hub markers distributed across this architectural design — particularly around the colonnades, bays, and roofline — allow variety specialists to track die identity even when doubling characteristics are similar across multiple dies. WDDR-010 is cataloged in the Wexler files under 1998 1 cent WDDR-010. The copper-plated zinc composition of post-1982 Lincoln cents produces a relatively uniform surface texture that, on well-struck examples, allows hub marker visibility to be assessed under magnification.
