Description

Representing one of more than ninety distinct doubled die reverse varieties documented for the 1998 Lincoln Memorial Cent, WDDR-005 was attributed by the Wexler Team and catalogued as Wexler Variety ID 1998 1¢ WDDR-005. The sheer volume of certified DDR varieties from the Philadelphia Mint in 1998 reflects both the proliferation of working dies used for high-mintage production and the rigorous study applied to this date by variety researchers. Attribution of this die relies in part on the three standard 1998 hub markers: the hub marker above the N in UNUM is present, the hub markers at the tops of Memorial bays 7 and 8 are visible, and the roof hub markers confirm the die family. Each WDDR number represents a distinct die pair with its own doubling characteristics separate from these shared hub features. The 1998 cent was produced in copper-plated zinc, with a pure copper outer layer bonded to a zinc core. Cross-reference: Wexler Variety ID: 1998 1¢ WDDR-005.
