1998 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-007
Error
Description
Seventh in the reverse doubled die census for the 1998 Lincoln Memorial cent, DDR-007 exhibits medium westward spread manifesting as an extra column number 7 — the phantom seventh column diagnostic visible from the seated Lincoln figure's hand down to the shin level within Frank Gasparro's memorial facade. VarietyVista documented this die under UVC-3103 and DMR-009, tracking four die stages: Stage A where both reverse and obverse surfaces exhibit early die state characteristics, Stage B showing light die clash marks in lower bays 3 and 4 at early-to-mid die state with the obverse also at EMDS, Stage C at mid die state (unconfirmed), and Stage D at late die state (unconfirmed). The Stage B die clash notation is particularly informative — clash marks develop when the obverse and reverse dies strike each other without a planchet between them, transferring design elements from one die to the other, and the presence of clashing in the lower memorial bays places this event in the interior architectural detail of the building. Philadelphia struck approximately 5.03 billion cents in 1998, continuing the massive modern cent production that consumed hundreds of reverse dies annually. The RDV-007 reverse design variant connects this die to a specific hub lineage shared with other 1998 Memorial cent DDRs. The hand-to-shin range of the extra column positions DDR-007's visible doubling in the middle third of the phantom column, covering the seated figure's gesture area down through the upper leg. Collectors should examine this region under 10-15x magnification, looking for the displaced secondary column impression against the memorial interior while also checking lower bays 3 and 4 for clash evidence to determine die state.
