1998 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-2959 with die marriage DMR-003, the 1998 Lincoln Memorial Cent DDR-001 displays medium spread to the west manifesting as an extra column number 7 — the column between Lincoln's hand and shin on the Lincoln Memorial reverse (RDV-007). This architectural doubling is particularly distinctive because the Memorial's columns provide precise, parallel reference lines where additional impressions are immediately recognizable. The early-mid die state (EMDS) reveals a die crack running from the seated Lincoln's throat through his tie and vest to the rim at approximately the 5:30 clock position — a sweeping crack that traces a path across the central statue of the Memorial design. Later die states (MDS and LDS) remain unconfirmed. The column-based doubling diagnostic — counting from the viewer's left to identify the affected column — is a convention specific to Lincoln Memorial Cent reverse varieties, where the twelve columns and the central statue provide a detailed grid for locating and describing doubled elements. The 1998 Philadelphia Lincoln Cent was produced in large quantities, and the combination of column doubling and the dramatic throat-to-rim die crack makes DDR-001 a visually compelling variety.
