Description

Cataloged by Cuds on Coins with WQC file numbers from the Thurman and Margolis Cud Book, this 1998-D Washington Quarter exhibits a cud where a section of the die rim fractured during production. The void allowed planchet metal to flow outward under striking pressure, creating a raised featureless blob at the edge that obliterates the design in that area. No cross-reference numbers to other catalogs are known. John Flanagan designed the Washington Quarter, struck at the Denver Mint in copper-nickel clad, weighing 5.67 grams with a 24.26 mm diameter. The 1998-D was the final year of the standard Washington reverse before the State Quarter program launched in 1999 with fifty new designs, making this one of the last cuds on the original heraldic eagle reverse that served the denomination since 1932.
