The 1998 Washington Quarter is a United States quarter from the Washington Clad and Silver Proof Quarters 1965-1998 series. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon, while the reverse displays an eagle perched on a bundle of arrows with olive branches below. Designed by John Flanagan. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel over a pure copper center, 24.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Produced at the Denver, Philadelphia, and San Francisco Mints. After the transition from silver to copper-nickel clad composition in 1965, Washington Quarters continued to be struck for circulation and in proof sets. San Francisco proof versions returned in 1968, and silver proof issues have been available since 1992. Key dates in the clad series are scarce primarily in high grade. Silver proof versions (1992+) offer collectors a precious-metal alternative to the standard clad composition.
