The 1997 Franklin D. Roosevelt Commemorative Five Dollar Gold is a United States five-dollar gold coin from the Modern Commemorative Five Dollar Gold (1984-Date) series. In 1997 the West Point Mint struck 11,894 uncirculated and 29,474 proof Franklin D. Roosevelt five-dollar gold coins, 41,368 in all. The obverse features Franklin D. Roosevelt in a boat cloak on the bridge of the USS Houston, from a 1938 photograph, and the reverse displays the presidential seal as shown at his 1933 inauguration. Struck in 90% gold and 10% alloy, weighing 8.36 grams, 21.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Designed by T. James Ferrell/James Peed.
