1996 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-005

Description

1996 WDDR-005 is a doubled die reverse on the 1996 Lincoln Memorial cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. On the seventh column, right of the statue, a bar stretches from the elbow to the middle of the knee. On the obverse, light scratches run NNW from the date and from the area left of it, and light vertical scratches lie behind the neck. A vertical gouge sits between the bottoms of the W and E in WE, and a strong gouge lies just ahead of the top of the hair, beneath the R of TRUST. On the reverse, gouges appear left of the Memorial base, between the bottoms of the O and N in ONE, between the tops of the C and E in CENT, and right of the lower T in CENT. Another gouge lies between the A and the second T of STATES, and one more meets the rim above the left side of the M in AMERICA. Inside the second U of UNUM, a vertical scratch runs from upper left to lower right. A light scratch runs north through the upper part of bay 11, continuing up through the cornice and the roof. Tanner Scott submitted the variety. Wexler lists no cross-references. Wexler's comments explain that it replaces the first 1996 WDDR-005 listing, a "wavy steps" variety, and add that wavy steps pieces are no longer thought to be doubled dies.
