Description

Occurring on the 1995 Philadelphia Roosevelt Dime, this cud formed when a piece of the reverse die broke away at the rim, leaving a raised featureless area of metal on the struck coin where the missing die fragment once imparted design detail. Cuds on Roosevelt Dimes are less commonly encountered than on larger denominations, as the smaller die face distributes striking pressure more evenly and is somewhat less prone to the rim fractures that produce cuds. John R. Sinnock’s Roosevelt Dime design, in continuous production since 1946, has accumulated a substantial but not overwhelming catalog of cud varieties across its many decades, and documented examples from the mid-1990s fall in a period of high-volume Philadelphia Mint production. The raised blob characteristic of a cud provides one of the most immediately recognizable die variety types, requiring no magnification to identify on well-preserved specimens.
