1995 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-007
Error
Description
Seven distinct doubled die reverse dies documented for the 1995 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent reveal that multiple reverse dies received imperfect hub impressions during that year's production run. WDDR-007 preserves its own unique doubling characteristics and die markers, distinguishing it from the six previously cataloged DDRs for the same date. The Philadelphia Mint produced billions of cents in 1995, requiring hundreds of working dies that each underwent the hubbing process where the master design was transferred under tremendous pressure. Each hub impression that fell slightly out of alignment with a previous impression created a new doubled die, and with so many dies being prepared, the statistical likelihood of multiple DDRs per year was substantial. The Memorial reverse's architectural detail, including the twelve columns, the steps, and the peripheral inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and ONE CENT, offered numerous areas where hub displacement could manifest. Cross-referenced as 1995 1¢ WDDR-007 and attributed by the Wexler Team. The depth of DDR cataloging for 1995 complements the date's fame as home to the most celebrated modern doubled die obverse.
