1994 (P) Matte Finish Jefferson Nickel - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

Attributed by Mike Sowell, the 1994 Special Strike (SMS) Jefferson Nickel WDDR-001 is a Class VI distended hub variety showing extra thickness with some slight separation on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, FIVE CENTS, and LLO of MONTICELLO. The specimen examined is certified PCGS MS-69 FS SMS, reflecting the exceptional preservation possible with these limited-distribution special strike coins. Obverse die markers include a series of die gouges on Jefferson's nose and a die dot below the B of LIBERTY. The reverse carries a die dot below the small right window of Monticello. The SMS designation for this 1994-P issue places it among the scarce special-format nickels produced outside the normal business strike and proof runs. The Class VI distended hub mechanism produces the characteristic thickening across inscriptions and design elements, distinguishable from the directional spread of Class II or the rotational pattern of Class V varieties.
