1993-S Doubled Die Obverse DDO-001

Description

The primary doubled die obverse for the 1993-S Proof Washington Quarter, DDO-001 exhibits light hub doubling spread across an unusually wide array of obverse design elements: the date, IN, TRUST, LIBERTY, Washington's queue (ponytail), the mintmark, and the ribbon end tying the queue. John Flanagan's obverse portrait depicts George Washington with his hair gathered into a queue — the eighteenth-century hairstyle where hair is pulled back and tied with a ribbon — and the doubling on both the queue and its ribbon end provides attribution targets on the portrait itself rather than just the surrounding inscriptions. The breadth of affected elements, spanning legends, date, mintmark, and portrait detail, indicates substantial hub displacement during die production. Die markers UVC-1975 and DMR-003 track this variety through three stages: Stage A where both obverse and reverse are in early die state, Stage B in mid die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C in late die state (unconfirmed). This is a copper-nickel clad proof (not silver proof) struck at the San Francisco Mint at 5.67 grams. Attributed by VarietyVista.
