Description

Closing the post-reclassification 1993-D doubled die reverse census, WDDR-009 delivers one of the most visually compelling forms of Lincoln Memorial cent doubling: a pair of extra feet and the lower portion of an armrest appear well below the seated Lincoln statue visible through the Memorial's open bays. This doubling of the statue itself — rather than the more commonly affected columns, bays, or legend text — means the secondary hub impression displaced the seated figure's lower half far enough to produce ghost elements that read as a second set of feet and chair beneath the primary image. Significant die deterioration accompanies the doubling: die cracks run along columns one, two, and three on the left side of the facade, and a large die chip has formed on column twelve approximately one-third of the way down from the top, indicating the die had entered an advanced state of mechanical failure. Additional diagnostics include roughly vertical die scratches under Lincoln's nose, to the left of his lips, and under his left eye on the obverse — surface marks that help distinguish this specific die from other 1993-D varieties. The combination of dramatic statue doubling with advanced die deterioration features makes WDDR-009 both a doubled die variety and a specimen of significant die breakdown, documenting two independent failure modes on a single die. Struck at Denver on copper-plated zinc planchets, 2.5 grams, 19mm, plain edge.
