Description

Submitted by Cliff Reuter, TDC-1C-1992-04 presents an instructive case of Mint die management following a clash event on a 1992 Philadelphia Lincoln cent. Multiple clashes occurred, but rather than retiring both dies, the Mint replaced only the obverse die — the new obverse shows neither clash marks nor abrasion — while keeping the original reverse die in service. Much of the clash evidence on the surviving reverse die was abraded away during Mint polishing, but residual clash marks persist in the third, eighth, and ninth Memorial bays, where the recessed bay openings made them difficult to reach with standard die polishing tools. This selective survival pattern is common: the concave geometry of the Memorial bays protects clash impressions from the abrasive wheels and compounds used to resurface die faces, leaving telltale remnants that betray the die's clash history even after remediation. Specific die markers confirm this die pair: two die gouges appear at the bottom of the right upright of the N in CENT, and a die gouge touches the lower left side of the leg of the R in AMERICA. The mixed evidence — fresh obverse, partially cleaned reverse — makes this variety a study in how the Mint balanced die economy against quality control during high-volume cent production. Struck at Philadelphia on copper-plated zinc planchets, 2.5 grams, 19mm, plain edge. Die markers for this die clash can be found as a two die gouges at the bottom of the right upright of the N of CENT and a die gouge touching the lower left side of the leg of the R of AMERICA.
