Description

Discovered by Lucien Robinson, TDC-1C-1992-02 records a die clash on a 1992 Philadelphia Lincoln cent where the dies tilted slightly toward the bottom of the obverse during the unobstructed contact. The resulting clash marks distribute across both faces in specific, identifiable patterns: the obverse carries impressions of the Memorial's column bays and roofline positioned in front of and behind Lincoln's portrait, while the reverse preserves an impression of Lincoln's head and neck along with a fragment of the numeral 9 from the date. The date fragment is a particularly useful diagnostic — because the date's position on the obverse die is known precisely, its appearance as a clash mark on the reverse die fixes the angular relationship between the two dies at the moment of contact, confirming the slight bottom-ward tilt described in the catalog. Lucien Robinson's documentation of this variety added a second confirmed typical die clash to the 1992-P clash census, demonstrating that the Philadelphia Mint experienced multiple clash events during this production year.
