1991 Typical Die Clash TDC-1C-1991-02

Description

Rather unusual among typical die clashes, TDC-1C-1991-02 on the 1991 Lincoln Memorial cent features two clash events where both contacts occurred off-center and one was rotated approximately 10 degrees relative to the other. This double off-center, rotated clash configuration creates an unusually complex pattern of transferred design marks because neither event aligned the dies in their normal relationship, and the 10-degree rotation between events further displaces the second set of marks from the first. From the Daniel Lavoie collection, this variety shows the R and Y of LIBERTY from the obverse die clashed onto the reverse, with Lincoln's beard profile appearing at a different position from a separate clash event — the displacement between the LIBERTY letters and the beard impression directly demonstrates the rotational difference between the two contacts. Most typical die clashes involve centered or near-centered die contact; the combination of off-center positioning in both events plus significant rotation makes TDC-02 a noteworthy study piece for understanding the range of die-contact geometries that can occur during press malfunctions. Struck at Philadelphia on copper-plated zinc planchets composed of 97.5% zinc and 2.5% copper, weighing 2.5 grams and measuring 19mm.
