1991 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-008
Error
Description
Producing one of the more sweeping architectural effects among the 1991 Philadelphia doubled die reverses, WDDR-008 generates extra Memorial columns to the right of columns 8, 9, 10, and 11 — a span of four consecutive columns on the right side of the building that each display a ghost column from the secondary hubbing impression. This wide-ranging column duplication indicates a hubbing misalignment with enough lateral displacement to affect multiple columns uniformly, creating a visual pattern that makes this variety relatively identifiable compared to subtler doubled dies. A gouge south of the first 9 in the date marks the obverse die. The reverse die carries multiple diagnostics: a die crack originating from the left cornice and running WNW through the right side of I in UNITED, a gouge at the top of O in OF, and gouges to the right of T in CENT. Additionally, a die crack extends from the left tip of Lincoln's bust to the rim, providing an obverse confirmation point. The combination of four duplicated columns and extensive die markers makes WDDR-008 among the more thoroughly documented varieties in the nine-entry 1991 Philadelphia series. Struck at Philadelphia on copper-plated zinc planchets composed of 97.5% zinc and 2.5% copper, weighing 2.5 grams and measuring 19mm. Die Markers: Obverse: A small die gouge can be found south of the 1st 9. Reverse: A short, diagonal die gouge can be found near the rim between the N and I of UNITED. A die gouge touches the top of the O in OF. Die gouges can be found to the right of the center of the T in CENT.
