1990 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-008

Description

Displaying a strong spread to the southwest, the 1990 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent WDDR-008 produces extra Memorial columns and images of the Memorial floor visible in the ninth and tenth bays — a dramatic doubling effect that ranks this among the more prominent reverse doubled dies for the date. The southwest directional spread combines both southward (vertical) and westward (lateral) hub displacement, creating a diagonal secondary image that affects multiple architectural elements simultaneously. Additionally, abraded die clash remnants in the fourth bay add a secondary error dimension to this variety: at some point during its service life, this reverse die clashed with the obverse die (struck without a planchet between them), transferring incuse obverse design elements onto the reverse surface. The clash marks were partially removed through die abrasion — the Mint's standard corrective procedure — but traces remain visible in the fourth bay, creating a die clash variety superimposed on a doubled die variety. Extensive die markers across both surfaces provide multiple attribution points, supporting confident identification of this specific die pair among the twelve Wexler-cataloged 1990-P doubled die reverses. The combination of strong directional doubling, extra architectural elements, and residual clash evidence makes WDDR-008 a multi-layered variety of particular interest to advanced collectors. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint on a copper-plated zinc planchet (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm diameter. Die Markers: Obverse: A small die gouge can be found SE of the N of IN. A short, horizontal die scratch can be found between the lower O and D of GOD. A die gouge can be found at the rim to the left of the 1st T in TRUST. A short die gouge protrudes from the top right of the 2nd T in TRUST. A die gouge can be found between the 9 and 0 in the date. A die gouge can be found below the 2nd 9 in the date. Reverse: A small die gouge can be found inside the U of UNITED. A die scratch runs from SW to NE in the upper 3rd Memorial bay. A die scratch runs from SSW to NNE in the 9th Memorial bay.
