1990 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001
Error
Description
The first Wexler-cataloged doubled die reverse for the 1990 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent, WDDR-001 exhibits extra thickness on USA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, the dots flanking ONE CENT, and the designer's initials FG. Separation from a spread towards the rim is visible on E PLURIBUS UNUM and on the upper letters in CENT, indicating a radial hub displacement that pushed the secondary image outward from the coin's center. This outward-spreading pattern is mechanically significant — it suggests the hub was seated slightly deeper or at a marginally different angle during the second hubbing impression, causing design elements near the periphery to shift more than those near the center. Strong die pitting in the date area on the obverse, gouges above the T in CENT, and a die crack across the top of the right cornice on the reverse establish the die pairing for attribution purposes. The twelve entries that follow WDDR-001 in the 1990-P reverse doubling census — WDDR-002 through WDDR-012 — make this one of the most prolific dates for doubled die reverses in the entire Lincoln Memorial series, reflecting both the enormous production volume and the intensive scrutiny applied by die variety researchers. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint on a copper-plated zinc planchet (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm diameter. ONE CENT has notched upper letters and a few letters in USA are notched at the bottom. Reverse: Two small die gouges can be found above the T in CENT.
