1989 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-015

Description

1989 WDDR-015 is a doubled die reverse on the 1989 Lincoln Memorial cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. Extra Memorial columns appear in bays 8, 9 and 10, and partial extra floor details appear in bays 1 and 2. On the obverse, many scratches head NE off the T and Y of LIBERTY at their tops, and several parallel scratches head SW off the lower left of the O in GOD. In the field right of the lips, scratches run SW to NE, and more SW-to-NE scratches cross the 19 of the date. On the reverse, parallel NW-to-SE scratches run from the base of the final column down to the F in FG. One die crack leaves the lower tip of the right base of the Memorial and runs SE to the rim, and a small die chip sits on the edge of that base, left of the lower F in FG. Right of the T in CENT, two parallel scratches run SSW to NNE. A second crack follows the left Memorial base's edge downward and then turns WSW to the rim. Remnants of a die clash appear at the bottom of the third bay and at the tops of the seventh and eighth bays. Billy G. Crawford submitted the variety, and Crawford lists it as CDDR-008. Wexler's comments say it was first listed as WDDR-023 and was renumbered to fill large gaps in this date's listings, which opened up once it was recognized that the 1989 Lincoln cent obverse had two doubled working hubs. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
