1989 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-013
Error
Description
Originally cataloged as WDDR-018 before being reassigned to the WDDR-013 position, this variety (Wexler variety ID 1989 1¢ WDDR-013) was renumbered following the discovery of two doubled working hubs for the 1989 Lincoln Memorial cent reverse — a significant cataloging event that restructured the entire WDDR numbering sequence for this date. The identification of the doubled working hubs meant that varieties previously attributed to individual die-level doubling required reanalysis, and several were reassigned to new positions in the revised catalog framework. WDDR-013 shows doubling on the lower portion of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with the effect concentrated in the lower serifs and stroke terminals of the legend letters. Gouges in the U and E of UNITED on the reverse provide supplementary die markers positioned within the same legend that carries the doubling evidence. The reassignment from WDDR-018 to WDDR-013 moved this variety five positions earlier in the sequence, reflecting a wholesale reorganization rather than a simple one-position adjustment. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm.
