Description

Significant as a dual-variety die, WDDR-010 (Wexler variety ID 1989 1¢ WDDR-010) carries very close extra thickness on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS, the right column dot, the designer's initials FG, and ONE CENT on the reverse — while the obverse of this same die bears the doubling from 1989 1¢ WWHO-002, the second doubled working hub obverse identified for this date. This means coins struck from this die pair exhibit two independent forms of hub doubling simultaneously: the WDDR-010 reverse doubling created when the reverse working die received misaligned hub impressions, and the WWHO-002 obverse doubling inherited from a doubled working hub that affected all obverse dies made from that hub. The "very close" spread classification places WDDR-010 at the narrow end of the doubling spectrum, where the separation between primary and secondary impressions is minimal and requires careful magnification to confirm. The co-occurrence of reverse die doubling with an obverse working hub doubling on the same coin makes this one of the most numismatically interesting varieties in the 1989 Lincoln cent series. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm. Reverse: A short die gouge extends from the lower left of the N in ONE. A die gouge (dot) can be found to the right of the T in CENT. A die scratch runs NW/SE between the upper 10th and 11th Memorial columns.
