1989 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-009

Description

Documented with extra thickness across UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, the column dots, the designer's initials FG, and ONE CENT, WDDR-009 (Wexler variety ID 1989 1¢ WDDR-009) affects a comprehensive range of reverse design elements. Notching is reported on the lower A's and on the upper portions of other letters in the affected legends, indicating the hub displacement direction created offset impressions detectable at both the top and bottom extremities of the letter forms. A die crack extends from the lower left side of the Lincoln Memorial to the rim, tracing a fracture line from the architectural detail outward to the coin's edge — a structural failure in the die steel that developed during production. A clash remnant positioned northeast from the top of the Memorial represents a transferred impression from a previous die clash event, preserved as a ghost-like design element in the upper field above the building. The combination of widespread extra thickness, multi-directional notching, a structural die crack, and clash remnants documents a die that experienced multiple categories of production events throughout its service life. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm. Reverse: A small die gouge can be found between the lower I and C in AMERICA.
