Description

Sharing the STATES OF AMERICA legend as its primary doubling zone with WDDR-006, this variety (Wexler variety ID 1989 1¢ WDDR-008) shows close spread on STATES OF AMERICA with notching on the lower A's, along with additional extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM, the designer's initials FG, and ONE CENT. The notching on the lower A's — small shelf-like extensions along the bottom serifs — provides a focused attribution target where the secondary hub impression is most easily confirmed. A die clash line runs south-southeast from the bottom of the Lincoln Memorial, indicating an instance where the obverse and reverse dies struck each other without a planchet, leaving a transferred impression from the opposing die face. Die clash evidence on doubled die varieties adds a layer of production history, documenting that the die not only experienced a hubbing anomaly during manufacture but also survived a clashing event during its service life. The south-southeast orientation of the clash line places it in the lower portion of the reverse field below the Memorial, where Lincoln's portrait from the obverse die would have contacted the reverse die surface. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm. Die Markers: Obverse: A die scratch runs through the TRU in TRUST. Reverse: Two strong die scratches run NE from the lower right of the E in ONE. A die scratch runs east from the lower right of the S in PLURIBUS. Two die scratches run through the upper ATE in STATES.
