1989 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-005
ErrorDescription
Presenting a close spread on the designer's initials FG, the lower second A in AMERICA, and the upper N in ONE and CENT, WDDR-005 (Wexler variety ID 1989 1¢ WDDR-005) distributes its doubling evidence across multiple design zones on the Lincoln Memorial reverse. The close spread produces subtle notching and thickening at the edges of the affected letters and initials — narrow enough to require careful examination under magnification but consistent enough across all four target areas to confirm a genuine hub displacement event. Die scratches are reported throughout the obverse, creating a network of fine incuse lines across Lincoln's portrait and surrounding fields that add to the die's diagnostic fingerprint. A gouge positioned southeast of the I in UNITED on the reverse provides an additional fixed reference point for attribution. The combination of obverse-wide die scratches with a localized reverse gouge creates a two-surface marker profile that helps distinguish this die from the other close-spread doubled die reverses in the 1989 census. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm. Reverse: A small die gouge (dot) can be found SE of the I in UNITED.
