1988 Atypical Die Clash ADC-25C-1988-01

Description

Cataloged as ADC-25c-1988-01 by MadDieClashes and residing in the private collection of Donn Page, this 1988-P Washington quarter preserves a rather strong atypical die clash in which the obverse and reverse dies met at an irregular angle, transferring design elements to unexpected locations. On the obverse, the long wing feathers and inner wing feather junction from the reverse eagle have clashed into Washington's nose area, while the junction of the laurel leaves has clashed into the queue of Washington's hair ribbon. The reverse records its own transferred impressions: Washington's throat line appears clashed under the eagle's beak, and Washington's nose and eye line are visible above the arrow tips. An overlay diagram documents the relative position of the dies when the clash occurred, confirming the angular displacement that produced these transfers. Atypical die clashes differ from normal clashes in that the dies meet off-center or at a tilt, placing transferred design elements in positions not predicted by standard clash geometry.
