1988 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-004

Description

1988 WDDO-004 is a doubled die obverse on the 1988 Lincoln Memorial cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. A spread toward the center is visible on the date and the bust's lower edge; the upper hair lines and the lettering of IN GOD WE TRUST and LIBERTY have a lesser spread. On the obverse, a small gouge sits between the 1 and 9 of the date, gouges lie left of the lower ear, and die pitting appears in the field right of the forehead and eye. On the reverse, a strong scratch heads northwest from the top of the Memorial's left base, and another runs northwest from the left side of the roof toward the E of UNITED. A scratch links the center right of the E in ONE with the top of the C in CENT, and several scratches cut through the lower part of ERICA in AMERICA. A die crack follows the diagonal of the N in ONE down to the rim, and two die chips sit at the top of that N. John A. Wexler submitted the variety. CONECA lists it as 2-O-II. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
