1988 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - Atypical Die Clash ADC-1C-1988-02

Description

ADC-1c-1988-02 is an atypical die clash on a 1988 Lincoln Memorial cent, cataloged by Mad Die Clashes. The clash is very strong. Lettering from the edge of a die seldom transfers, but here traces of ON and parts of UNITED show on the obverse die. The dies were rotated 11° when they clashed, against the roughly 5° usually seen. On the obverse, the bays left marks, ON from ONE clashed left of Lincoln's head, the Memorial base line shows, and part of UNITED (DETI) sits below and left of the bust. On the reverse, the base line of the bust left a mark through STA of STATES and TED of UNITED, the back of the bust left one through UNITED's T and I that runs on into bay 1, and the outline of the head runs through NE in ONE and CE in CENT. Both dies were abraded to remove the clash. The coin is in Robert Mohan's collection.
