Description

Presenting a lighter doubling signature than DDO-001, the 1987 Philadelphia DDO-002 shows light extra thickness on LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the date. Extra thickness without pronounced notching or separation lines indicates a minor hub shift that reinforced the letter and digit strokes without creating the stepped edges seen on stronger doubled dies — the secondary impression fell close enough to the primary that the two images overlap almost completely, thickening the design elements rather than producing visibly separated double images. Cataloged as UVC-2400 with die marker reference DMR-003, DDO-002 occupies a sequential position immediately after DDO-001 in both the UVC and DMR numbering systems, suggesting the two varieties were documented in close succession by the same attribution team. While light extra thickness is among the subtler doubled die manifestations, its presence across three major design groups — the LIBERTY legend, the IN GOD WE TRUST motto, and the date — confirms that the hub shift affected the entire obverse rather than being confined to a localized zone. This broad but mild coverage is consistent with a slight rotational or lateral displacement of the hub during the secondary hubbing impression. Struck at Philadelphia (no mint mark) on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm, from the 1987 mintage of 4,682,466,931 cents.
