Representing the second documented cud for the 1985-P date, CU-25c-1985P-02 from CudsOnCoins records a die rim fracture on this Philadelphia Washington Quarter. Philadelphia's 1985 quarter production was part of routine annual output, with the P mintmark — introduced on quarters in 1980 — identifying the facility. John Flanagan's design had been in continuous service for over five decades, and the copper-nickel clad composition adopted in 1965 remained standard. Die rim breaks that produce cuds are a function of material fatigue: repeated impact at high speed generates stress concentrations along the die's edge, and when the steel reaches its failure threshold, rim segments fracture. The broken area cannot transfer design detail, leaving a raised blank zone on every subsequent coin until the die is replaced. Quality control removed most heavily cuded dies quickly, but coins struck between fracture and die removal enter circulation bearing the evidence.
