Description

Fifth rim cud recorded for the 1985 Philadelphia Washington Quarter, an unusually high count that suggests systemic die vulnerability during that year's production run. A rim cud represents the loss of part of the die's rim gutter: on the coin it appears as a raised interruption in the design rim that tracks the rim's course. Five cuds from a single date-mint combination indicates that either the die steel batch, heat treatment process, or striking pressure parameters contributed to elevated rim failure rates. Philadelphia produced approximately 775 million quarters in 1985, consuming a large number of die pairs over the course of production.
