Description

Fifth rim cud recorded for the 1985 Philadelphia Washington Quarter, an unusually high count that suggests systemic die vulnerability during that year's production run. Rim cuds form when accumulated stress fractures at the die's outer edge cause a section to break away entirely, creating a cavity that fills with metal during striking to produce a raised, featureless mass at the coin's periphery. Five cuds from a single date-mint combination indicates that either the die steel batch, heat treatment process, or striking pressure parameters contributed to elevated rim failure rates. Philadelphia produced approximately 775 million quarters in 1985, consuming a large number of die pairs over the course of production.
