1985 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

The strongest doubled die obverse cataloged by the Wexler Team for the 1985 Philadelphia cent, WDDO-001 shows a prominent spread towards the center on the date, IN GOD WE TRUST, the hair at the top of Lincoln's head, the right bottom of the bust, and the LI in LIBERTY. Cross-referenced by CONECA as 1-O-II and by Crawford as CDDO-001, this variety benefits from triple-source confirmation. Obverse die markers include a short vertical die scratch right of the first T in TRUST. The reverse carries a constellation of diagnostics: a diagonal die gouge southwest of the E in E PLURIBUS UNUM, a diagonal scratch below the second Memorial column, a die clash mark in the lower third bay, and numerous east-west scratches above and below the Memorial. The reverse clash mark in bay 3 indicates this die was involved in a clash event during its production run, layering two distinct die events onto the same coin. The centerward spread is consistent with Class II hub doubling. Struck at Philadelphia on copper-plated zinc planchets at 2.5 grams and 19mm from the 1985 mintage of approximately 5.65 billion cents (Wexler ID: 1985 1¢ WDDO-001).
