Description

First cataloged pre-cud on the reverse of a 1984-P Roosevelt Dime, PC-10c-1984P-01R documents the precursor stage of a rim-area die failure. Pre-cuds represent a critical intermediate phase in die deterioration: a crack has propagated from the rim inward, isolating a section of the die face, but the fragment has not yet dislodged or shifted. Coins struck from a die in this condition show a raised crack line tracing the boundary of what will eventually become a full cud if the die remains in service. The distinction between pre-cud and full cud is temporal — the same die may produce pre-cud specimens early in its failure sequence and full cud specimens later, creating a documentable progression of die states. The "R" suffix indicates this pre-cud affects the reverse, where the Roosevelt Dime's torch, olive branch, and oak branch design provides the affected area.
