1984 Typical Die Clash TDC-1C-1984-02

Description

Credited to Rick Carlson and cataloged by MadDieClashes, TDC-1C-1984-02 documents a complex multi-event die clash on the 1984 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent. Die clashes occur when the obverse and reverse dies come together without a planchet between them, leaving mirror-image transfer marks from each die impressed into the face of the other. What makes this specimen especially instructive is the evidence of at least one strong clash event accompanied by two possibly weaker secondary clashes, indicating the dies collided multiple times before the error was detected and the dies were either polished or retired. A measured 5-degree rotation between the struck design and the clash impressions reveals the dies were slightly misaligned rotationally at the moment of empty-chamber impact. The strongest clash marks appear through bay 3, exiting from the Memorial baseline below the left urn — a diagnostic path traceable with magnification on both obverse and reverse. On the right obverse, only the strongest clash event left visible traces, with the weaker events either too faint to survive or partially obscured by subsequent strikes. Black and white arrows in the original MadDieClashes documentation indicate additional weaker clash impressions at separate positions, reinforcing the multi-event interpretation. Struck at Philadelphia on copper-plated zinc planchets at 2.5 grams from a 1984 mintage exceeding 8.15 billion cents. Only the strongest die clash event is seen on the right side of the obverse die.
