1984 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002

Description

Wexler's 1984 1-cent WDDR-002 documents a nice spread towards center on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, the designer's initials, and ONE CENT on the Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent — one of the more broadly distributed doubled die reverse varieties for the date. Spread towards center indicates the secondary hub impression shifted inward relative to the primary. The designer's initials — Frank Gasparro's FG monogram at the lower right of the Memorial — are a particularly useful diagnostic because their small size makes even slight doubling proportionally prominent. Reverse die markers include a curved scratch between the upper U and N in UNITED and a die crack from the left cornice into the I of UNITED. The die crack, connecting the Memorial's cornice to the UNITED legend, indicates progressive die fatigue and provides a chronological marker for specimen production. No cross references to other attribution systems have been established. Struck at Philadelphia on copper-plated zinc planchets at 2.5 grams from the 1984 mintage exceeding 8.15 billion cents.
