Description

Opening the Wexler doubled die reverse series for the 1984 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent, WDDR-001 shows extra thickness on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA with a separation line on the lower U in UNITED and notches on the lower letters of RICA in AMERICA. Separation lines — fine parallel edges flanking the primary stroke — mark the boundary between hub impressions more distinctly than simple extra thickness, while notches on the lower serifs of RICA indicate localized displacement at the letter bases. Obverse die markers include a die dent right of the beard and a heavy gouge appearing as a dot south of the E in LIBERTY. Reverse markers include a small gouge at the lower left of the Memorial, a gouge right of the middle of the first column, and a gouge right of the top of the second column — three architectural gouges providing strong secondary diagnostics. Designated Wexler 1984 1-cent WDDR-001, with no known cross references. Struck at Philadelphia on copper-plated zinc planchets at 2.5 grams. A heavy die gouge (dot) can be found south of the E in LIBERTY. Reverse: A small die gouge (dot) can be found on the lower left of the Memorial. A small die gouge can be found on the right side of the middle of the first Memorial column. A small die gouge can be found to the right of the top of the 2nd Memorial column.
