1984 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-009

Description

Carrying cross references to Crawford CDDO-007 and Coppercoins 1984P-1DO-006, Wexler's 1984 1-cent WDDO-009 is one of the more thoroughly documented minor doubled die obverse varieties for the Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent. The doubling presents as extra thickness with separation lines on the date and TRUST, where fine lines paralleling the primary strokes reveal the boundary between hub impressions. Separation lines indicate enough displacement to create a visible gap without complete separation. Obverse markers include a scratch arcing through the upper date digits, a scratch below the date, a heavy scratch right of Lincoln's nose, and numerous additional scratches. Reverse markers include die clash remnants in the eighth and ninth Memorial bays, scratches northwest from the first column toward the N in UNITED, a scratch southwest from the Memorial roof, and a scratch above the O in OF. Struck at Philadelphia on copper-plated zinc planchets at 2.5 grams from the 1984 mintage of over 8.15 billion cents. Extra thickness plus separation lines all spread towards the center show on the date and TRUST. Die Markers: Obverse: A die scratch arcs from west to ENE through the upper digits in the date. A die scratch runs from WNW to ESE below the date. A heavy die scratch runs from WNW to ESE to the right of the nose. Numerous other die scratches run throughout the obverse. Several die scratches run NW from the bottom of the 1st column to the N in UNITED. A die scratch runs SW from the top right side of the Memorial roof above the right cornice. A die scratch runs from WSW to ENE above the O in OF.
