1984 Atypical Die Clash ADC-1C-1984-01

Description

Documented by MadDieClashes as ADC-1c-1984-01, this 1984-P Lincoln Memorial Cent exhibits a very strong, unabraded die clash tilted approximately 2 degrees from the horizontal axis. The clash marks are remarkably deep and visible to the naked eye without magnification — an unusual degree of intensity for a die clash event. Atypical die clashes differ from normal die clashes in that the clash impression is displaced from its expected mirror-image position, often due to one die being rotated, tilted, or shifted during the impact event. The approximately 2-degree tilt from horizontal produces a clash pattern that is rotationally offset from where a standard head-on clash would place the transferred design elements. A key diagnostic separating this die from the similar ADC-1c-1984-06 is a crack running from the Memorial roof through the N of UNITED extending to the rim — die 06 does not exhibit this crack. The strong, unabraded nature of the clash means the die was not polished after the clash event, preserving the full depth and detail of the incuse reverse design elements transferred to the obverse die face. Victor David Brenner's Lincoln obverse and Frank Gasparro's Memorial reverse were struck in copper-plated zinc at the Philadelphia Mint in 1984, weighing 2.5 grams at 19 mm diameter. The 1984 Philadelphia mintage of 8,151,079,000 cents required an enormous number of working dies, creating numerous opportunities for clash events during high-speed production.
