1984-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001

Description

Documenting hub doubling on the reverse of the 1984 Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial cent, DDR-001 is the first cataloged doubled die reverse for this date and mint. Doubled die reverses form through the same mechanism as their obverse counterparts — multiple hub impressions with slight misalignment during die preparation — but they affect Frank Gasparro's Memorial design rather than Brenner's portrait. On DDR-001, medium spread is visible on AMERICA and the designer's initials FG, with light spread on ONE CENT. The gradation from medium to light spread reflects the geometry of the hub doubling: the misalignment produced its strongest effect on certain portions of the design while leaving others less affected. Die markers UVC-2386 and DMR-003 confirm attribution to this specific die. Doubled die reverses are generally scarcer than doubled die obverses, partly because collectors tend to examine the obverse first and partly because reverse doubling can be subtler in circulated grades. Denver produced approximately 5.57 billion cents in 1984 on copper-plated zinc planchets at 2.5 grams.
