Description

Fundamentally different from all other doubled die varieties in the 1983 census, WWHO-001 is a Doubled Working Hub Obverse — meaning the doubling occurred not on an individual working die but on the working hub itself, the master tool from which multiple working dies are produced. Designated Wexler WWHO-001 with no additional cross-references, this variety shows doubling on LI in LIBERTY and slightly on the lower right of the 8 and the lower curl of the 3 in the date. The separation lines on LI are only visible on early die state specimens, as this fine doubling detail is among the first features lost to die wear during production. Because the doubling resides on the hub rather than a single die, every working die produced from this hub carries the same WWHO-001 doubling — but individual die markers vary from die to die, since each working die acquires its own unique scratches, gouges, cracks, and preparation marks during manufacture and service. This is why die marker documentation notes that markers "will vary among the individual working dies" for both obverse and reverse. Collectors may encounter the same hub doubling on specimens with completely different die marker profiles, confirming multiple dies share the hub-level variety.
