Description

Contributed by Steve Young, CCLTI-1C-1983-04 catalogs the fourth Type I counter clash on the 1983 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent, with counterclash evidence visible on both obverse and reverse. On the reverse, partial columns appear in the third and fourth bays of the Memorial — column fragments that do not belong to the normal design in those positions, representing transferred impressions that made the round trip through two offset die clash events. On the obverse, a partial impression of the back of Lincoln's collar appears to the right of the lower Y of LIBERTY, displaced from its normal position on the bust. This dual-sided visibility of counterclash effects is valuable for attribution because it confirms the mechanism from two independent vantage points: the obverse shows reverse-origin elements transferred back via counterclash, while the reverse shows obverse-origin elements that completed the same round trip in the opposite direction. The partial columns in the Memorial bays are especially diagnostic because the columnar architecture provides straight-line reference features whose displacement from normal positions can be precisely measured.
