1983 Type I Counter Clash CCLTI-1C-1983-02

Description

Discovered by Rock Hasenberg, CCLTI-1C-1983-02 records the second Type I counter clash variety on the 1983 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent, produced through two separate die clash events at different angles. In this variety, the two clash events created a sequence of design transfers between the dies: the first clash drove reverse design elements into the obverse die face, and the second clash — occurring at a shifted angle — transferred those marks back, depositing a counterclashed impression of Lincoln's forehead from the reverse onto the obverse in a displaced position relative to the normal portrait. The counterclashed forehead appears as a faint raised outline in the obverse field, offset from the primary portrait, and its identification requires understanding that the image traveled a round trip — from the obverse hub to the obverse die, transferred to the reverse die during the first clash, then returned to the obverse die during the second clash at a new position. This two-step transfer mechanism distinguishes Type I counter clashes from simple die clashes, which involve only a single contact event. Each of the two clash events left its own set of diagnostic marks on both dies, and the angular difference between the events determines the magnitude and direction of the counterclash displacement visible on struck coins.
