1983 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

Attributed across multiple reference systems as Cherrypickers FS-01-1983-102 (035.1), Breen #2309, CONECA 2-O-V, and Wexler WDDO-002, this second Wexler-designated doubled die obverse on the 1983 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent features a Class V counterclockwise spread pivoting from approximately 12 o'clock, with doubling visible on LIBERTY and the date. The counterclockwise pivot direction distinguishes WDDO-002 from the clockwise rotation of WDDO-001, and the 12 o'clock pivot point places the axis of rotation at the top of the die — meaning design elements farthest from the top center show the greatest displacement, which explains why LIBERTY and the date (both positioned well away from 12 o'clock) exhibit the most noticeable doubling. Obverse die diagnostics include a die scratch running from the center of the 8 to the center of the 3 in the date, providing a precise attribution marker visible under moderate magnification. The reverse carries die cracks at both the lower left and lower right of the Memorial extending to the rim, documenting progressive structural failure of the reverse die that accompanied this obverse.
