Description
Standard interior cud CU-1C-1982-52 on the Zinc Large Date subtype contrasts with the two rim cuds that immediately precede it in the census, illustrating the alternation between peripheral and interior die failures that characterizes any large cud population. Interior cuds are generally more visually dramatic than rim cuds because they extend into the design field, obliterating or distorting recognizable elements of Lincoln's portrait, the Memorial building, or the surrounding legend text. The location of the displaced metal relative to specific design features — whether it covers part of the date, crosses a letter of LIBERTY, or intrudes into the bust — determines much of the variety's visual character and collector appeal. Each cud's position on the die is permanent once the fracture occurs; subsequent strikes from the damaged die reproduce the same featureless mass in the same location, creating a consistent diagnostic signature. Struck from the 2.5-gram copper-plated zinc planchet with a Large Date die, this cent belongs to Philadelphia's post-transition 1982 output. Attribution by Cuds on Coins.
