Description
Consecutive with CU-45 in the census numbering, CU-1C-1982-46 is another Zinc Large Date cud whose discovery was confirmed within a close chronological window — a pattern suggesting that a productive batch of unsearched 1982 zinc cents may have yielded both finds. The Zinc Large Date subtype combines the post-transition copper-plated zinc composition with the wider, more generously spaced large date numerals. The visual difference is subtler but real — zinc cents tend toward a slightly cooler, more silvery tone than the warm reddish hue of fresh bronze — and experienced collectors can often sort by eye before confirming by scale. Philadelphia struck both compositions in enormous quantities during 1982, and the Zinc Large Date likely accounted for a major share of second-half production as the Mint fully committed to the new planchet specification.
